What is a Truck COI?
A COI (Certificate Of Inspection) is a requirement by the Australian government, ensuring that a vehicle is inspected by a registered and Approved Inspection Station (AIS). An AIS will inspect the vehicle for minimum vehicle safety standards to ensure it is in line with government regulations.
Does my truck need a COI?
Heavy vehicles (over 4.5T) are classified as a COI (Certificate of Inspection) vehicle and to renew registration in Queensland, all heavy vehicles are required to pass a COI, typically every 6-12 months. Owners of a COI vehicle must always have a current COI, unless exempt.
Vehicles requiring a COI include (but are not limited to):
- Heavy Vehicles over 4.5 tonnes
- Trailers over 4.5 tonnes
- Light Vehicles (Vans/Caravans/Motorhomes etc) over 4.5 tonnes
- Prime movers
- Tippers
COI Exemptions
Under certain circumstances, some COI vehicles are eligible for a COI exemption.
COI exemption vehicles include:
- New COI vehicles (a vehicle purchased during the year after they are registered).
- NOTE: This does not include if the vehicle is being transferred to another person or has been registered overseas or anywhere else in Australia
- Remote area vehicles in certain shires that are exempt (visit the TMR website to find out more)
- Accreditation scheme vehicles
- COI vehicle participating in the NHVAS (National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme)
- A COI is required if the vehicle is being sold, unless the new owner is also participating in the NHVAS and adding the vehicle to the maintenance module
- A vehicle registered with a special interest vehicle registration concession
When do I need to renew my trucks COI?
It is the responsibility of the COI vehicle owner to renew the COI prior to the current COI expiry. Generally, you will receive your reminder from Transport and Main Roads 2-3 months before the existing certificate expires. We recommend that you book your vehicle in to be checked as soon as you receive your reminder notification. This allows us to determine any defects or recommended repairs, ensuring that they can be rectified before the current COI expiry. If defects are not rectified prior to a COI, a re-inspection will be required for your vehicle to pass the COI.
As stated by Transport and Main Roads
“If a COI vehicle is inspected:
- up to 2 months before the current certificate expires, the new certificate will not begin until the current certificate expires
- more than 2 months before the current certificate expires, the new certificate will commence from the date the vehicle was inspected
- after its previous certificate expires, the expiry date of the new certificate will be calculated from the expiry of the previous certificate (e.g. if your COI is normally due on 1 July but you have it inspected on 1 August, your new COI will commence on 1 July.”
What do you need to do if your truck passes the COI with us?
Nothing! As we issue an electronic assigned certificate, you don’t need to do anything. If the certificate is unassigned however, you will need to present it in person to a TMR customer service centre.
If your certificate is hand written (typically a hand written certificate is only provided if the electronic certificate cannot be supplied), you must present the original (pink) copy of the certificate to TMR OR email a scanned copy to customer.service.support@tmr.qld.gov.au OR fax a copy to (07) 3066 7845 OR post the certificate to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
